PDP course - Gender Strategies for Development InitiativesFacilitator: Dr Juliet HuntDates: 21-22 August (Thu-Fri) 2008 Early Bird Registration: By 10 July 2008 Who is it for?This course is suitable for a range of development practitioners including contractors and consultants, NGO program staff, bilateral and multilateral development workers. Participants with some international experience of development assistance will find this course useful, along with more recent practitioners.Course Description:What are gender equality strategies and how are they developed and implemented? How can we increase the likelihood of women and men benefiting equally from development activities? What lessons have been learned on gender strategies? This participatory course will enhance participants’ skills for developing key elements of a gender strategy for AusAID and multilateral development initiatives.Systematic attention to gender equality issues in program/project design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation remains rare. Both women and men continue to be disadvantaged by gender blind activities. However, a recent Asian Development Bank (ADB) review demonstrates that gender strategies are effective gender mainstreaming tools. They can increase participation and access to resources, and support progress towards gender equality. Course Content:

Facilitator’s profile:Juliet has worked in development since 1978, focusing on gender equality, project design, monitoring and evaluation. She currently has a capacity building role with the Vanuatu Women’s Centre and has worked closely with the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre. She has undertaken reviews on gender equality for the Development Assistance Committee (DAC/OECD) and the Asian Development Bank and has worked closely with government agencies and NGOs on gender mainstreaming strategies. She has developed gender analysis tools, guidelines, training programs and gender audit methodologies. In 2000, Juliet was awarded a 3-month Churchill Fellowship to research good practice and successful strategies on gender mainstreaming in Bangladesh, India, UK, Netherlands and USA. She has written a number of articles on gender equality issues in development practice and organisations. In 2006/2007 she assisted AusAID with the development of their new gender equality policy and guidelines.(Back to Course Schedule) Course Fees:The following course fees are applicable for participants based within Australia only (please click here for additional information relevant to overseas participants).
