Chris Dureau

Principal Technical Associate (Community Engagement)
MA BSocW

Chris Dureau has over 30 years of strategic and personnel management experience in international development projects, specialising in community engagement and capacity building. He has assessed and supported the work of international development projects and NGOs in over 30 countries. Chris is currently providing key inputs into the IDSS-managed ACCESS 2 project and Yogyakarta Community Assistance Facility in Indonesia as well as, the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project in East Timor. As a facilitator in the IDSS Professional Development Program, Chris delivers the Community Engagement and the Capacity Building courses in the Experienced Practitioners Program and in the Emerging Practitioners Program.

 

Michelle Whalen

Senior Technical Associate (Social Development)

Michelle Whalen brings to her role nearly twenty years experience in international development. Her roles have ranged from supporting grass roots community initiatives, to serving as S.E. Asia Regional Coordinator for Red Cross Australia. Between 2005 and 2007 Michelle was engaged as the Social Development Coordinator and Training Advisor for the AusAID funded East Timor Community Water Supply and Sanitation Program (CWSSP), managed by IDSS. Michelle  is also a key trainer and facilitator for the Professional Development Program.

 

Alan Smith

Senior Associate Consultant
Dip Youth and Community Welfare, BA (Econ)

Alan Smith was appointed as a Senior Associate Consultant to IDSS in 2006.  He has more than 30 years experience in development work in Australia, South and South-East Asia with bilateral, multilateral and NGO agencies. This includes experience as Team Leader or Project Manager of large, multi-sector and multi-disciplinary projects and as the Country Director for CARE International in Myanmar and the National Director of the Australian ‘Freedom From Hunger’ Campaign. He has extensive experience in AusAID and Australian NGO activities and in all project cycle activities, including planning, management, monitoring and evaluation as well as specific assignments with the ADB, World Bank, UNDCP, UNDP, UNICEF, FAO(UN) and AusAID (AIDAB). He also served as the Team Leader for the AusAID funded and IDSS managed project Australia-East Timor Community Water Supply and Sanitation Program (CWSSP).

 

Pip Chandler

Technical Associate (Learning and Communications)
BA (Communications) MA (IDEA)  

Pip's background spans over 10 years international experience (Australia, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Nepal, Germany and the UK) in media and communications producing content for a variety of media including film, television, online, CDROMs and DVDs. In recent years she has worked largely on the production of content for education, advocacy and learning in international development.  She brings to the role qualifications in communications (Bachelor of Arts/Communications), and international development (Master of International IDEA).
