Effective Gender Analysis and Strategies for International Development

Who is it for?

This course is suitable for a range of development practitioners including contractors and consultants, NGO program staff, bilateral and multilateral development workers. Participants with some international experience of development assistance will find this course useful, along with emerging practitioners.
 

Course Description 

What is the latest evidence on effective ways to empower women? How can we ensure that women and men benefit equally from development activities? What are gender strategies and how are they developed and implemented? What lessons have been learned on how to achieve good results for both women and men?
 
This highly participatory course is focused on developing skills to ensure that women participate and benefit equally in development projects.
 
Achieving gender equality and empowering women is essential for sustainable development. The latest evidence also shows that achieving gender equality increases the overall effectiveness of development projects. All development practitioners need sound gender analysis skills and the ability to adapt these to different projects, programs and contexts, based on the very latest evidence.
Systematic attention to gender equality issues in program/project design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation remains rare. Both women and men continue to be disadvantaged by gender blind activities. However, recent reviews demonstrate that gender strategies can be effective tools for ensuring that women participate and benefit equally, and for increasing project effectiveness.
 

Course Content

  • Gender awareness and sustainable development;
  • Gender analysis concepts, approaches and tools;
  • Evidence on effective strategies for achieving gender equality results – findings from major reviews and the implications for development practitioners;
  • Update on gender equality policies and the expectations of major donors (AusAID, ADB and others if requested by participants);
  • Practical applications of gender analysis tools;
  • How to develop effective gender strategies for projects.
 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will have increased knowledge and skills on:
  • Gender analysis concepts;
  • How to apply gender analysis tools and approaches;
  • AusAID’s gender policy (and the gender policies of other agencies if requested) and the implications for development work;
  • The links between gender analysis, poverty analysis and social analysis;
  • The findings of major international reviews on effective strategies for addressing gender inequalities and achieving gender equality results;
  • How to develop a gender strategy/action plan.

    • The above course fees are applicable for participants based within Australia only. All course fees are inclusive of GST and they cover registration, course materials and meals during the course delivery.
    • To qualify for Early Bird registration fees, course fees must be paid to IDSS within the early bird registration deadline. Beyond that the regular fee will be applicable to all registrations including the existing ones which were not paid within the deadline.
    • Overseas participants will incur an additional fee of AU$40.00 (inclusive of GST) to cover the additional cost of processing overseas payments and registration. Please click here for further information relevant to overseas participants.
    • The assessment task is included within the course fees for students of RMIT University who are currently enrolled in academic programs relevant to the course and are going to claim advanced standing/Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) status. Participants who are willing to complete similar follow-up assessment task are requested to contact IDSS directly before submitting their enrolment request. An additional fee of AU$110.00 (inclusive of GST) will be applicable.
