Facilitator: Bill Pennington
Dates: 22 - 23 June (Tue - Wed) 2010
Early Bird Registration: By 11 May (Tue) 2010

Who is it for?

This course is suitable for practitioners with experience in the M&E aspects of international development projects. Participants without experience may attend this course provided they have attended the introductory M&E course.

Course Description

International development practitioners are increasingly being asked to demonstrate the quality, results and impact of their work by donors, partner agencies and the general public. Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) plays an essential role in answering these questions.

This course aims to explore the different types of monitoring and evaluation approaches currently being utilised by international development practitioners to guide their activities and to demonstrate the short and longer term effectiveness of their work. In addition to grappling with various M&E models this course also investigates the development of practical M&E systems and specific tools that can be utilised within this framework.

The objectives of this course are to:
  • Investigate the links between forms of aid and different M&E approaches;
  • Identify the processes, levels and key components of an M&E system; and
  • Explore a variety of key tools and techniques utilised in M&E

Learning Approach

This course is practice based and each participant is asked to bring one or two written M&E frameworks/systems that they are familiar with to the course (documents will be provided for those that do not have access to their own material). Participants will continually apply the theoretical concepts and learning of the course to these practice documents.  Over the two day course participants will critique and amend these M&E documents for further discussion and input back in their workplace and in the program.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will have:
  • An understanding of the M&E approaches used for different forms of aid delivery;
  • A knowledge of the processes, levels, key components and some common tools used in a M&E system/framework;
  • Capacity to develop, revise and update current  M&E frameworks/systems.
