Facilitator: Simon Richards
Dates: 13 - 14 September (Mon - Tue) 2010
Early Bird Registration: By 2 August (Mon) 2010

Who is it for?

This two-day workshop is aimed at assisting experienced development practitioners who are working in contexts where conflict is an issue, to consider and manage the implications of their programs and design more conflict sensitive projects. Participants with knowledge and experience of working in international development assistance as an aid worker, a consultant, a coordinator or manager of bilateral development assistance or NGO programs are most suitable for this course.

Course Description

The global trends in the incidence of conflict demonstrate a significant reduction in the number of inter-state conflicts but many states are troubled by internal conflicts that are often chronic in nature and difficult to resolve. The course will examine the basic tenets of conflict, practical conflict sensitive programming and the importance of considering the impacts of programs on conflict dynamics (as well as vice-versa) throughout all aspects of the project cycle in aid and development work.

At the end of the course participants will have reflected on their experience and other practitioners to better understand the issues, considerations and consequences for all actors of working in conflict environments.  The course will cover some of the basic concepts of conflict; different approaches to and tools for assessments of conflict at different levels, and how to integrate conflict sensitivity into all aspects of the design and management of humanitarian and development programs.
