Course DescriptionAs a Turkish saying goes - ‘A fish does not know it’s in water until it jumps out of it’. Whether we like it or not, our very own Australianess, coupled with our family of origin experience influence the way we relate to or connect with difference. Enhancing professional cultural competence is often perceived as an optional area of study, but appreciation of cultural & religious diversity is an asset to be harnessed by all members of society. In doing so, social cohesion is cultivated.
This course seeks to support the professional development of practitioners and students seeking to better understand Australian Muslims and be in a better position individually or as an organisation to provide culturally safe services and support to the Muslim community. Culturally competent practitioners are able to leverage off cultural knowledge and use intercultural skills to effectively engage Muslim / Islamic organisations, it’s leaders and community members. Case studies and role plays will be used to highlight culturally safe approaches.
A highly interactive and visual two day introductory course will focus on: building cultural fluency when working with Muslims and community engagement strategies, the development of intercultural competencies such as self knowledge and communication styles. The course will help you and your organisation to evaluate how well you already engage with the Muslim community and will provide opportunities to discuss relevant and ‘hot’ issues that affect Muslim communities in Australia and globally.
